The upper blade of a swing beam shearing machine is fixed to the blade holder, and the lower blade is fixed to the worktable. The blade holder moves in an arc around a fixed axis to complete the shearing action.

The hydraulic cylinders of a guillotine shearing machine are vertically mounted on both sides of the machine. The up-and-down movement of the cylinders drives the blade holder to move vertically, performing a straight cut on the sheet metal.

This difference in principle directly determines their applicable scenarios—the guillotine shearing machine provides more direct vertical shearing force and is suitable for thick plates; the swing beam shearing machine's arc motion is efficient for shearing thin plates.

II. Blade Life

The swing beam shearing machine has 2 cutting edges on the upper blade and 4 cutting edges on the lower blade.

The guillotine shearing machine has 4 cutting edges on both the upper and lower blades. The cutting edges are replaceable, resulting in a longer service life.

III. Blade Gap Adjustment

Swing shears are equipped with a manual quick-adjustment mechanism, allowing manual adjustment of the gap based on plate thickness and material. However, the shearing angle and gap will change when the blade holder rotates.

Guillotine shears utilize a three-point roller guide structure, with the blade holder moving without backlash against the upper and lower guide rails. The blade gap is electrically adjusted via the system, offering greater convenience and accuracy.

V. Processing and Use

The blade gap of a swing beam shearing machine needs to be manually adjusted, and the shearing angle is fixed. The shearing effect on thick plates is generally average. Its advantage is its low price; if high precision requirements are not needed and the plate thickness is within 8mm, it can be chosen from a cost-saving perspective.

The blade gap of a guillotine shearing machine is electrically adjustable, achieving twice the precision of a swing beam shearing machine. The shearing angle is adjustable, and the integral welded frame undergoes vibration aging treatment, resulting in good rigidity and high precision. For plates thicker than 8mm, a guillotine shearing machine is recommended because the swing beam's principle limits its shearing precision for thick plates. Its disadvantage is higher manufacturing costs and price.

In short, choose a swing beam shearing machine for thin plates and a limited budget; choose a guillotine shearing machine for thick plates and high precision requirements.

VI. Configuration and System

Swing beam shearing machines are typically equipped with the E21S system, which controls the back gauge stroke and blade stroke, and can store 40 programs. Front feeding and pneumatic rear support are optional.

Besides the E21S, guillotine shearing machines are also commonly equipped with systems such as P40 and DAC360S. Structurally, it is often equipped with a servo motor. When using the P40, no separate system is needed for front feeding; the P40 can be used directly for operation.

The upper gate type system offers greater flexibility, and both external configurations are available as options.

VII. Purchase Recommendations

Swing plate shearing machines are suitable for shearing thin plates where high precision is not required, and are relatively inexpensive. If you only need regular use, shearing small thicknesses, infrequent operation, and have a limited budget, a swing plate shearing machine will suffice.

Guillotine shearing machines have a wide range of applications, processing stainless steel, aluminum alloys, and high-strength alloy plates. While slightly more expensive, they offer good value. For shearing large quantities of thick plates with high precision requirements, a guillotine shearing machine is recommended.

Both can handle thin plates, but a swing plate shearing machine may not be able to do everything a guillotine shearing machine can. If you are unsure whether you will need to process thick plates in the future, it is advisable to have sufficient margin for error—buying an undersized or insufficiently functional machine will result in significantly higher replacement costs later than purchasing the right machine initially.
