II. Common Japanese grades of steel plates for general and mechanical structures
1. In Japanese steel (JIS series) grades, ordinary structural steel is mainly composed of three parts: The first part indicates the material,
e.g., S (Steel) for steel, F (Ferrum) for iron; the second part indicates different shapes, types, and uses,
e.g., P (Plate) for plate, T (Tube) for tube, K (Kogu) for tool; the third part indicates characteristic numbers,
generally the minimum tensile strength. For example: SS400 – the first S indicates steel, the second S indicates "structure,"
400 is the lower limit tensile strength of 400 MPa, and the whole indicates ordinary structural steel with a tensile strength of 400 MPa.
2. SPHC – The first S is an abbreviation for steel, P for plate, H for heat, and C for commercial, and the whole indicates general-purpose hot-rolled steel plates and strips.
3. SPHD – Indicates hot-rolled steel plates and strips for stamping.
4. SPHE – Indicates hot-rolled steel sheet and strip for deep drawing.
5. SPCC – Indicates cold-rolled carbon steel sheet and strip for general use, equivalent to Chinese grade Q195-215A. The third letter C is an abbreviation for Cold. When tensile testing is required, add T to the end of the grade, resulting in SPCCT.

6. SPCD – Indicates cold-rolled carbon steel sheet and strip for stamping, equivalent to Chinese 08Al (13237) high-quality carbon structural steel.
7. SPCE – Indicates cold-rolled carbon steel sheet and strip for deep drawing, equivalent to Chinese 08Al (5213) deep drawing steel. When non-aging properties are required, add N to the end of the grade, resulting in SPCEN.
Temperature designations for cold-rolled carbon steel sheet and strip: Annealed state is A, standard temper is S, 1/8 hard is 8, 1/4 hard is 4, 1/2 hard is 2, and hard is 1. Surface finish designations: D for matte finish rolled steel and B for bright finish rolled steel. For example, SPCC-SD indicates standard tempered, matte finish rolled cold-rolled carbon sheet for general use.
Another example is SPCCT-SB, which indicates standard tempered, bright finish cold-rolled carbon sheet requiring guaranteed mechanical properties. 8. JIS designation method for steel grades for mechanical structures:
S + carbon content + letter designation (C, CK), where carbon content is represented by the median value multiplied by 100, and C indicates carbon, K indicates carburizing steel. For example, carbon steel coil S20C has a carbon content of 0.18-0.23%.
